Our Story

The Austern Story

 

The Austern journey began back in 2014 when 19-year-old Lily Wu was studying commerce at University of New South Wales. Lily landed a job with a multinational firm but soon realised that the traditional way of working up the ladder was not something that she was passionate about.

 
 
 
After coming up an idea of putting Australian students into Chinese Internships, Lily received the $10,000 AMP Tomorrow Maker grant to help her kickstart her business. She didn’t really know what she was in for but thankfully she learned a lot - including how to sell, how to hustle, how to lead and how to build a business. The Internship Program was going strong but Lily realised that something was missing. 
 
“As a current student myself, I am really passionate about how my generation as millennials are walking into a rapidly changing society,” Lily remarked. “Our generation has been trained in skills since childhood for industries that are going to be replaced by technology or automated in a few years. And many of us are nowhere near prepared.”
 
That's when she joined forces with Jamie Lee and came up with a simple solution, by changing the internship program to career bootcamps. They shared the same belief that unpaid internships bring little value for students. The vision for Austern was about creating life-changing opportunities that equip young people to embark on a career path that fits into their passion.
 
But more than a career bootcamp, a tribe was born. A tribe of Austernians. Students were given a stage to shine, and through our alumni network, individuals where inspired to take on the leadership roles to be part of something bigger than themselves. 
 
So you may wonder what’s next for Austern? 
 
“Our view of a successful business is not measured in number of programs. Both Lily and I want to build a company that would thrive for years because its competitive advantage is based on its value and guiding principles. Going forward, we want to craft more amazing workshops and reverse mentoring programs that bring different employee generations closer together. We believe when young people are paired with seasoned executives amazing things can happen.” said Jamie. 
 
It’s been an incredible journey so far, and it’s only the beginning.
